Jon Moss  PGMOL  official asked for an early start, as he had been at Maidstone the night previous. He took the floor first. He hosted an interactive presentation entitled Managing the game. He covered many subjects including VAR; a bomb scare; 4 penalties in one match; Alex Ferguson; Chelsea G/K refusing to be subbed; Teamwork; Getting the big decisions right. Respect and others. This was followed by a Q&A session. After approx 90 minutes he called a close.

Brian Smith gave a VoT for a thoroughly enjoyable presentation.

Problem Corner;  Brian Smith raised the question, how to deal with a player who, when you have stopped play to have words with the player he (possible caution)  bends down pretending socks/boots require attention. Various thought were given.  Colin Coote mentioned  an item from the last meeting theme regarding  a goalkeeper  being penalised (sending off) for handball from a backpass that was heading goal ward. This was clarified in discussion.

Names  were Required  for FA Cup  Final tickets, Dinner, as AGM coming shortly, names for committee.

A O B, Graham Bradbury expressed his displeasure over a committee decision which was explained by the Chair.

Minutes of the 6 December 2018 Meeting

With 22 members and guests attending.

 

Vice chair, J Ham welcomed all to the meeting.

Apols; were received from Mssrs; Butcher, Bayley; Blakey; McEvoy; Burke; Unwin; C Ledgeway; Cottingham.      

Wishes were given to James Unwin who is in Ward 16 awaiting an op next week..

M Cottingham on behalf of the Sunday Morning League appealed for a ref to cover a match on Sunday.

Dinner;  after negotiations with Marriott we have got menu and price fixed , date Friday 17th May,

day prior to FA cup Final, price £27.50. Menu on web site or contact Sec or Treas  for details and selections

Safeguarding, Barry Casterton gave a report on the paper he had put together with regards U18 refs. This covers players/touchline and senior refs when you have juniors running a line. Also covers travelling/changing and behaviour.

Membership, approx 59 members of which 20 are newly qualified have paid subs. These (ex?) members are not covered for insurance or any legal advice if they are injured or require legal advice

Tony Thornton, then presented his quiz which was greeted in the usual way. Thanks were given to Tony and it was nice to see him back in the fold again.

Next Meeting, Jan 3 with Craig Pawson  PGMOL official the evenings guest. Make a note and spread the word.

The Buffet, was enjoyed with Pizzas soon gone.

Minutes of the 1 November 2018 meeting

On 1st Nov 18
With 19 members and guests present.

The chairman welcomed all to the meeting.

Apols  were received from Mssrs; Bradbury; P Ballantyne; Ham; Unwin; Cottingham; Luff; Thornton.

Dinner; 17th May (Friday), Marriott; Price/Menu TBA.

Subs,  many not paid. They are now not covered by the insurance etc.

Stock, Conor has some sports shirts and small items in stock.

Aaron Bannister level 2b official standing in at late notice then hosted an interactive presentation entitled Incidents in Non League Matches.  Starting with a match involving York City and concluding with a match he was involved in. The presentation lasted  the best part of 80 mins with a refreshment break midway. This was a first class presentation with plenty of discussion. The only drawback was that none of the newly qualified refs were in attendance.

Minutes of the 4 October 2018 Meeting

Minutes of meeting held at NHS Sports & Social Club on 4th Oct 18
With 23 members and guests in attendance.

A moments silence was observed for ex-committee member and chair chairman John McCarthy.
Apologies were received from Mssrs Milburn; Smith; Andy Kaye; Butcher; Blakey; Shiers; McEvoy;
Thornton and Bradbury.
Dinner was set for Friday 17th May. This was due to Cup Final being played next day. Menus and
prices TBA.
Membership was now due. Be aware you are not covered by RA insurances.
Liam Slack our guest and sports psychologist gave an outline of his career after his footballing
career hit the buffers at an early age being released as not good enough. Went to St Johns and got a
PHd in sports psychology. Is very passionate about his topic and now covers from premiere down to
national north/south. Discussed a few topics then had a group discussion. Main things to look for
are Think-Feel-Act; Mental toughness; Strength. Also touched on VAR.
Also had talks with Rugby and Cricket.

With 33 members and guests attending

Minute’s silence was observed for Don Thorpe; John Fowler and Kevin Sweeting who had passed away recently.

Apologies were received from Mssrs J Ledgeway; McEvoy; Shiers; Atkinson; Bishop.

Chairman welcomed all to the meeting, with a good turnout.

Dinner all in hand and appeal made for raffle prizes.

R U Taking the P run names asked for as we had our members run in refs kit to the event over the past 4/5 years. All in a good cause, walk, run and half and half.

A Blakey gave details of the York League’s team victory in the semi final, and details of the new appointments sec.

Problem corner  Dave King said he was representing an E Riding referee who has been accused of swearing at a player. Anyone young or old who finds themselves in  this situation can get help from the RA locally or nationally.

 Graham Bradbury gave a profile of Don Thorpe our ex president (twice), MSA recipient, life member and regular attendee at meetings. Also mentioning ex members John Fowler and Kevin Sweeting.

Lol Cussons Award was presented to Anthony Thornton by Guy Mowbray, due to Anthony being unable to attend the dinner.

Guy Mowbray our guest for the evening gave a resume of his history interspaced with questions and queries from the floor. He touched on numerous topics including; VAR; UAFA;FIFA; bias in fans; interviewing players/managers; also techniques for interviewing; social media; venues; York City; Nigel Worthington; how he got into broadcasting. After 90 mins we had to call a close to discussion.

There being no more business meeting closed at 9.40 with more carrying on after.

Dinner/ Lol Cussons evenings, names, menu selections, monies were now being taken

Welfare Officer, Barry Casterton had agreed to take this position. David King the CRA position.

Problem Corner, there was on incident in recent Liverpool match regarding homophobic remarks.
This was discussed also refs actions.

Ross Joyce RDO of NRCFA then gave a very interesting presentation regarding misconduct. This
covered the whole game system, benefits of/ setting out and reporting. Viewing match incidents,
with group discussions on mock reports with review and feedback. New guidelines were highlighted
regarding offences against match officials, ie, failure to control players. (Even at grass roots level)

Problem Corner; discussion on the Jon Parkin penalty.Was the ref too quick with his whistle?

Brandon Bishop and Sam Bayley then gave an interactive presentation using an RA video of match incidents discussing;  position, credibility, communication, body language, control, did the ref fulfil expectations of the outcome.

A.o.B. A Blakey said that the Sat League representative team will be playing at Tadcaster on 13th Jan.

It was mentioned of roadworks at Crockey Hill starting. To allow extra time for your journey.

Chairman welcomed all and made a prompt start as the presentation was due to last 90 mins.

Details were given regarding Dinner; Subs Due; York RA shirts.

Mark Haywood  RDO West Riding CFA, our guest then gave a CFA presentation entitled “ Managing the game at grassroots level”. This was aided with slides , rather rushed due to illness at CFA (North Riding).   He covered numerous topics mentioning; confidence, calmness, understanding, behaviour, useful traits, managing players, stepped approach, be a good listener, manage incidents on the pitch, 9/5 challenges, warning signs as to trouble brewing, frustration.    These topics were discussed and feedback was given. Due to a computer hitch, he had to improvise for the latter part of the evening. There was then a Q& A finish.

On 5th Oct with 36 members and guests present.

Paul Ballantyne said a few words about Bob Grainger (ex member and member of York FA and York  Minor League) and a minute’s silence was held in his memory.

The chairman welcomed the large attendance to the meeting.

Minutes from the last meeting were on line, no matters arising.

Social functions; appeals were made to attend a joint function of CRAs & CFA at Northallerton (22 Oct); Dinner , date 7th April, Marriott Hotel,£28.50. guest Geoff Eltringham (national list ref)

Membership 27, with subs due, and discounted fee ends this month.

Problem corner,  instance of abuse from club AR on far touchline with no spectators on; instance of player banter get out of hand.  Various views discussed and hopefully advice given.

The evenings guest, Neil Swarbrick gave a presentation of clips and inviting feedback and alternative decisions if necessary.  Main outcome of the evening was; protect yourselves and look after yourselves. There then followed a Q & A session.

A Presentation was made to John Ledgeway for his commitment during his ten years as chairman.

Minutes of the York RA Meeting
Held at York NHS Sports & Social Club
on 7 September 2017
with 19 members present

The Chair welcomed all to the meeting and the start of the new season, noting a number of apologies due to evening fixtures.

A minute’s silence was held in memory of Eddie Benson MBE, a long-time member and first recipient of the Chairman’s Award.

Members were made aware of the County RA games evening at Northallerton on Sunday 22nd October, and the visit of Neil Swarbrick, Premier League referee, to our next meeting on 5 October.

Membership stands at 25 at the start of the new season, with subs now due.

David King walked through 2017/8 Law updates with members.

Problem Corner: an issue was raised where a referee had abandoned a game due to a tackle resulting in a broken leg. There was a chance that assault charges would be brought against the offending player; the referee was advise to direct any contact towards the County FA and to use the national RA for support as required.

Conor Ledgeway, Liam Powell and Conan Dunne then gave a great presentation describing their experiences officiating at the Iber Cup in Portugal, representing the North Riding FA.
